Oscar Picks, How'd I Do?

posted by Mike Bell -

Taking a look back at my Oscar picks. I only concentrated on what I considered the big categories. I was 4 for 9. My picks are in italics. The actual winners are in bold.

Best Picture. Were it up to me, I'd pick Darkest Hour. Dunkirk should get this just for how different a war movie it was. Lady bird could upset, but I think 3 Billboards has a lock.

  • Call Me by Your Name
  • Darkest Hour
  • Dunkirk
  • Get Out
  • Lady Bird
  • Phantom Thread
  • The Post
  • The Shape of Water
  • Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Best Director. This will be the catagory that allows the Academy to give Christopher Nolan the Oscar they wanted to give him for "The Dark Knight Returns" but just couldn't vote for a super hero movie.

  • Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk
  • Jordan Peele, Get Out
  • Greta Gerwig, Lady Bird
  • Paul Thomas Anderson, Phantom Thread
  • Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water

Best Actress. I think Frances McDormand has a lock on this.

  • Sally Hawkins, The Shape of Water
  • Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
  • Margot Robbie, I, Tonya
  • Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird
  • Meryl Streep, The Post

Best Actor. The same with Gary Oldman. Lock.

  • Timothee Chalamet, Call Me by Your Name
  • Daniel Day-Lewis, Phantom Thread
  • Daniel Kaluuya, Get Out
  • Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour
  • Denzel Washington, Roman J. Israel, Esq.

Best Supporting Actress. Imagine, if Metcalf wins, the tv promos for the new "Rosanne" will say, "And co starring Academy Award winner Laurie Metcalf!"

  • Mary J. Blige, Mudbound
  • Allison Janney, I Tonya
  • Lesley Manville, Phantom Thread
  • Laurie Metcalf, Lady Bird
  • Octavia Spencer, The Shape of Water

Best Supporting Actor. I think Woody and Sam cancel each other out. This is catagory that the Academy sometimes gives you the award for your career body of work. That said, Christopher Plummer could take this. I think Richard Jenkins is more likely. It'll probably be Willem DaFoe.

  • Willem Dafoe, The Florida Project
  • Woody Harrelson, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
  • Richard Jenkins, The Shape of Water
  • Christopher Plummer, All the Money in the World
  • Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Best Original Screenplay. This will be how the Academy rewards Greta Gerwig.

  • The Big Sick
  • Get Out
  • Lady Bird
  • The Shape of Water
  • Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Best Adapted Screenplay

  • Call Me by Your Name
  • The Disaster Artist
  • Logan
  • Molly's Game
  • Mudbound

Best Animated Feature

  • The Boss Baby
  • Coco
  • Ferdinand
  • The Breadwinner
  • Loving Vincent
