In the run up to this years Academy Awards, HD Net played an entire month of Oscar winning motion pictures. This included the 2012 Best Documentary feature, "Searching For Sugar Man."
I'm not sure if the doc ever played in theaters here. I know I didn't see it until this past weekend. I had put in my DVR queqe at some point and forgot about it. But Sunday morning my wife and I were looking for something to watch and gave it a shot.
It's the facinating story of a singer songwriter named Rodriguez who released a couple of LPs in the early seventies that absolutely tanked in the USA.
But amazingly in apartheid South Africa, Rodriguez became more popular than Elvis! And in the late 90s some film makers decided to find out what had happened to Rodriguez. There were rumors and stories that he had set himself on fire or shot himself on stage.
The truth is much more surprising.
If you really love music, you owe it to yourself to see this documentary. If you're like me, you'll wonder how the hell wasn't this man a major star in America in the early seventies.
