Jimmy Buffett and Broadway are getting a divorce.
A victim of weak ticket sales, Escape to Margaritaville will close on July 1st after a three-and-a-half month run. Last week, despite heavy local TV advertising, the show based on Buffett's songs played to just 56 percent of capacity. Worse, many of those tickets were sold at a discount.
The show was panned by the theater critics of New York's major newspapers -- who are known for their antagonism toward rock and roll-based shows. More bad news came when the Tony Award nominations were revealed -- the show received none.
Escape to Margaritaville did stronger business during preview runs in California, Houston, New Orleans and Chicago. The producers expect to bring back the show for Parrotheads via a national tour starting in 2019.
I'll never get to see it! But there's booze in the blender...
